The Frentana Winery was born next to the village of Rocca San Giovanni, in the Province of Chieti, Abruzzo. It is an agricultural cooperative society which includes about 430 winegrowers who cultivate about 800 hectares of vineyards in the Frentani area, a name that derives from the ancient Italic population of the Frentani. As in all of Abruzzo, also in the Frentana area, two main varieties of wine grapes dominate: Montepulciano (red wines) and Trebbiano (white wines). Other varieties present are among the whites the excellent Pecorino, the Cococciola, typical of this area (the municipality of Rocca San Giovanni has the largest extension), the Passerina and other non-native varieties such as Chardonnay. The vineyards are cultivated in espalier or with the traditional Abruzzo pergola.

The family and history

The winery was founded in 1958 by a group of winegrowers led by the doctor Francesco D'Agostino, with the aim of protecting producers from the uncertainties associated with the free market for grapes. As with many cooperatives, the initial objective was to make wine from the grapes and preserve the wine in order to be able to sell it without difficulty to the bottlers; over time the company has gradually moved on to marketing packaged wine up to the final consumer, on the national and foreign markets. This evolution has led to considerable changes to the original organizational and production model, with much greater attention than in the past to quality in all phases of the process, from planting the vineyard to bottling and after-sales services. The original structure of the "wine tower" is still present and operational (in 2014 an experiential room was built on its top, from which you can enjoy the spectacular landscape of the sea and the mountains), even if most of the vinification now takes place in other departments.
