Someone would eat sushi almost every day... But do you really know which wines to pair it with or should you continue to marry it only with tea or sake?
Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish, made up of vinegared rice combined with another ingredient which is often raw fish (salmon, tuna, sea bream, etc.) or seafood and nothing goes better with sushi than a dry white wine !
To support the pungency of wasabi and the earthy, salty taste of soy sauce while enhancing the flavors of fatty tuna or salmon, opt for lightly spiced dry white wines. Then Riesling , Gewürztraminer or Sauvignon Blanc are a perfect match.
Even bubbles can accompany raw fish dishes very well: sushi, sashimi but also seafood tartare or ceviche. Sparkling white wines with notes of white flowers, brioche, and fresh butter pair very well with Japanese sushi, especially when it's made with seafood like scallops or shrimp.
Sushi and red wine ... an impossible combination? Even if it is not the most classic or recommended pairing, red wine lovers will be able to taste a light and savory Pinot Noir to accompany their tuna-based nigiri. For the most delicate sushi, rosé wines are also recommended, to try!
