Cabernet Franc is one of Bordeaux 's oldest red grape varieties. Libournais is his favorite terroir. It is often used together with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to create the so-called "Bordeaux blend".
Cabernet Franc , outside of France, is widespread in America, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In Italy , the best pure Cabernet Francs are produced in Friuli Venezia Giulia and in Tuscany (Bolgheri).
Cabernet Franc, characteristics
The wines made from Cabernet Franc are medium in color with fine tannins , subtle aromas of red berries and spices. In union with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon it gives the wine complexity and a bouquet of aromas. It produces fruity wines that can be drunk young, but whose great vintages are kept for a long time.
It is an older variety than Cabernet Sauvignon, which allows it to be planted even further north, up to the Loire Valley. In Anjou it is also vinified into sweet rosé wines. Cabernet Franc is used today in about 20 countries in Europe and around the world.
